Overview:

Spasticity is a common problem among individuals who have upper motor neuron disorders. Botulinum toxin injection is a common interventional procedure done for treatment of Spasticity. It is commonly done blindly i.e. without any guidance. Recently, Electrical stimulation and EMG have been used for guidance. This type of guidance has it’s own limitation such as inability to visualize the actual muscle where the injections are expected to be done thereby increasing the probability of injecting into neighboring muscles, stimulation of neighboring muscles during electrical stimulation of the muscle expected and injecting into the blood vessels. Ultrasound guidance helps visualize the muscles and blood vessels accurately thereby minimizing the chance of injecting into the neighboring structures.

Goals:

The purpose of this workshop is to educate the audience on

1. Basics of musculoskeletal ultrasound

2. Musculoskeletal anatomy under ultrasound

3. Usage of ultrasound as guidance for interventional procedures such as botulinum toxin injection

Audience:

Trainees and practitioners of Neurology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Objective:The audience will be able to

Evaluate musculoskeletal anatomy of upper and lower extremity under ultrasound for the purpose of performing botulinum toxin injections

Review of upper and lower extremity anatomy - 10:15am – 11:15am

Musculoskeletal anatomy under ultrasound (upper extremity) – 11:15am –12:15pm

lunch – 12:15pm – 1pm Musculoskeletal anatomy under ultrasound (lower extremity) – 1pm – 2pm Live demonstration of ultrasound guided botulinum toxin injection - 2pm – 3pm
